Rick Martens

1 NHL Game

November 16, 1978 Vancouver Canucks vs Pittsburgh Penguins. 3-6 loss.

Rick Martens had a breakout junior season playing for the 1977/78 New Westminster Bruins. With Martens in net the Bruins won the WHL championship and then the Memorial Cup championship. That summer Martens was drafted 158th overall by the Vancouver Canucks.

Few details are known about Rick Martens only confirmed appearance in the NHL. He dressed as a backup to Gary Bromley. Glen Hanlon, who would have normally been on the roster, was injured or unavailable to play Vancouver's November 16th, 1978 game against the visiting Pittsburgh Penguins. At the time Martens was playing junior hockey for the WHL's New Westminster Bruins so he was recalled on emergency circumstances.

Rick Martens' hockey career ended abruptly in December, 1980. Unhappy with Toledo Goaldiggers coach Jim Sanko, Martens decided to walk away from the game mid season. He had attended the 1980 Canucks training camp but didn't get offered an NHL contract and saw the writing on the wall. He returned to British Columbia.
