When the Florida Panthers lost goalies Al Montoya and Roberto Luongo to injuries in the same game, they had to recall Dan Ellis from the AHL and Sam Brittain from the ECHL. Brittain dressed as backup goalie to Ellis. Brittain spent six games in the NHL before Luongo was ready to return.
Early 2017, the Florida Panthers lost goalie Roberto Luongo to injury. Instead of recalling the next goalie on their depth chart, Reto Berra, the Panthers opted to recall Britain from their ECHL affiliate because Berra, who was playing in the AHL, was much further away. It was thus travel logistics that saw Brittain get his second stint in the NHL with Florida. Later in the season Brittain, now playing in the AHL, was recalled to dress as backup to James Reimer in a game against the Capitals.
Brittain was drafted by the Panthers in 2010 and then spent the next four seasons at the University of Denver. He was a first team All-Star and All-American in his last season of college. July, 2014 Brittain signed a three-year, entry-level contract with the Panthers.
