Tom Fenton was getting his hair cut when his phone rang. He didn't want to interrupt the hairdresser to he let the call go to voice mail. It was Coyotes assistant GM Brad Treveling looking for an NHL goaltender. "At first I didn't believe them," said Fenton, "I thought it was a couple of my buddies playing a a prank." (1)

March 23, 2010 the Phoenix Coyotes faced a tough situation while visiting the New York Rangers. Goalie Ilya Bryzgalov had come down with an illness. Unable to dress, the Coyotes were scrambling trying to find a backup goalie for Jason LaBarbera. Their AHL netminders were in San Antonio, too far away to make New York for game time. Phoenix was forced to sign an amateur to a tryout deal. The Coyotes needed a goalie who had not played pro hockey. Goalie coach and former NHLer Sean Burke, for example, would have had to clear a 24 hour waiver. Tom Fenton had played Division III college hockey and was working locally at Manhattanville College with their hockey team. Fenton described the call as, "a once in a lifetime opportunity." (1)

Fenton left the game with an official NHL jersey, equipment bag, game puck, the official scoresheet and the memory of a lifetime.
