"I keep waiting for myself to wake up," said Deobald during his only game in the NHL. When the Edmonton Oilers lost goalie Devan Dubnyk suddenly to the flu they were in need of a backup goalie to Jeff Deslauriers. Bryan Pitton was recalled from the AHL but was unable to make it from Springfield to Edmonton in time for the game. Enter local goalie Nathan Deobald, who was the third string goalie for the University of Calgary. "I missed the call, I was in class and didn't have my phone with me," said Deobald after the Oilers had signed him to an amateur tryout. "I checked my messages after class was over and at first it was a little surreal. I wasn't sure if my coaches were joking around with me or not." When the University of Calgary lost their #1 goalie, Dustin Butler, to an injury and their backup to a suspension, Deobald got his first CIS start just two weeks before being given an Oilers jersey. By sheer luck there were Oilers staff at the game he played and impressed them enough to get the emergency call. "I really didn't have enough time to be nervous," said Deobald, "Its just been exciting."(1)
