May, 2004 Kelly Guard was signed by the Ottawa Senators as a 20 year old undrafted free agent.  He had impressed scouts with his solid play for the Kelowna Rockets. Shortly after signing with the Sens, Kelly Guard helped the Rockets claim the 2004 Memorial Cup. Guard was named the tournament's top goaltender as well as Memorial Cup MVP. He couldn't have asked for a better way to finish his junior career.

Guard got his first taste of the NHL November, 2006 while Ray Emery was recovering from an upperbody injury. Guard backed up Martin Gerber for 4 games before Emery was ready to return.

February 10, 2007 Ray Emery viciously slashed Montreal Canadien's forward Maxime Lapierre during a game between the two clubs. For the incident Emery was handed a 3 game suspension. Kelly Guard was recalled to dress as Martin Gerber's backup while Emery served his time.

2007, Guard became a free agent and was not offered a new contract by the Senators. He played a couple more years of pro hockey before retiring. In 2012 he accepted a position as goaltending coach with the WHL's Prince Albert Raiders.
