January 20, 2011 San Jose Sharks vs Vancouver Canucks. 2-1 win.

On the morning of January 20, 2011 Jordan White had just
finished attending one of his classes at the University of British
Columbia. He was getting ready for a routine hockey practice with UBC when he
was summoned to his coach's office. Jordan White explains what happened
next, “I wasn’t really sure what was going on because usually when we have
meetings, it’s after practice. He was on the phone at the time and the goalie
coach was in there and he had a little smirk on his face. I was kind of
apprehensive about what was going on and then he got off the phone and gave me
the good news –unfortunate news for the Sharks but good news for myself – that
I was going to be backup tonight.”(1)
In town to play the Vancouver Canucks, the Sharks suffered a blow when goalie Antero Niittymaki injured his groin during the morning skate. San Jose was sent scrambling to find a backup net minder for Antti Niemi. With the AHL club to far away to summon a goalie in the team's system the Sharks looked around the Canucks backyard and found Jordan White. White had played a couple season's in the WHL and was his University team's starting goalie. Essentially, he was the best goalie in the area with no contractual obligations to any other pro hockey team. The Canucks signed White and he would suit up that night. "(The warmup) was a bit different. I've been starting all the games at UBC," said White. "So I let (Niemi) take (most of) the shots today...I just went in there and took the shots for the guys so that they could be prepared."(2)

White's heart jumped a beat in the first period when Vancouver's
Alex Burrows collied with Shark's goalie Antti Niemi. Niemi was slow to get up and White came ever so close to
seeing action. "I think it
would have been a really great experience for me if I did get in there,"
said White. "Hopefully, the outcome would have been the same."(2)
White
returned to the University team the next day with a night to remember for the
rest of his life. "These are guys you meet on TV, you have in your
fantasy pool or guys you cheer for," said White. "So it's nice to see
how they prepare and practice their trade." San Jose Sharks coach
Todd McLellan was thankful for White for being able to fill in on such short
notice but did not lose to opportunity to poke a little fun, "the coach at UBC
has an NHL goaltender now. So the rest of (CIS) better worry." (2)
