Craig Kowalski was drafted by the Carolina Hurricanes in the eight round of the 2000 NHL entry draft. He was signed to a three-year, entry level contract after four seasons with Northern Michigan University.

Craig Kowalski was Carolina's third goalie during their 2006 Stanley Cup run. He did not dress during any games but was on hand in case of emergency and practised with the team on a regular basis.  The Hurricane's felt his contribution was worthy of a Stanley Cup ring, engraved with his name. "Every kid that's ever played hockey wanted to have that, and now I've gotten one," said Kowalski.  "Winning a championship on any level's hard, put this is the pinnacle. The whole reason we play hockey is to win the thing and I got to witness it first hand, and hopefully I'll get to win it someday first hand." (1)

Kowalski's short stint as an NHL backup goaltender came the following season when Cam Ward suffered leg laceration during a game on March 11th, 2007. Kolwalski dressed as backup to John Grahame during the 3 games that Ward missed.

Kowalski was named a ECHL All-Star in 2007/08 but found his fame in Britain. He won the EIHL Challenge Cup Championship four consecutive years, 2011-2014, with the Nottingham Panthers.
